Federal Government should ban “extremist Islamist organisation” Hizb ut-Tahrir, a local MP has urged the Coalition party room during one of Islam’s holiest months.
Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the organisation last week suggested that engaging in jihad during Ramadan was “one of the most virtuous and beloved acts to Allah”.
Ms Henderson raised “deep concerns” about Hizb ut-Tahrir with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other Coalition colleagues on Tuesday, she said.
“I am pleased that the Attorney-General raised the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir with ASIO Director General of Security Duncan Lewis last week who advised that these activities did not warrant a ban. The Attorney- General has advised that he will convene a briefing with Mr Lewis and Coalition MPs.”
Ramadan, a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset, began last Friday and finishes on 24 June.
