A 79-year-old man has died in a crash at Bannockburn which left his female passenger with life-threatening head injuries.
Police said a Nissan sedan, travelling south west on Clyde Hill Road, collided with a 4×4 utility towing a caravan on the Midland Highway at 4.30pm, Wednesday.
The two cars crashed at the intersection of the roads, killing the driver of the sedan.
An ambulance helicopter airlifted the passenger of the sedan, a woman in her seventies, to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The woman remained in a critical condition Thursday morning, a hospital spokesperson said.
An ambulance took the occupants of the utility, a man and a woman and a small child to a Geelong hospital with minor injuries.
The crash brought the Victorian road toll to 70, compared to 80 at the same time in 2016.
The accident comes after the TAC and local police this week urged motorists to exercise caution over the Easter period.
