A Thompson man has narrowly survived a violent home invasion after a group of attackers broke into his house early on Wednesday morning.
The 31-year-old man was in his bedroom when three or four people allegedly attacked him, one with a machete, detectives said.
“It’s incredibly violent,” Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Gary Wilson said. “It would be horrible to wake up to that.”
“I would say it was an edged weapon. I still don’t know if they came with the weapon or found it at the house.”
The assailants fled in the man’s black 2002 Holden Commodore sedan, registration V4449.
The man stumbled into a neighbouring property, where the occupants gave him first aid and called an ambulance.
“They were fantastic to have attended to him and contacted triple zero,” Sen Sgt Wilson said.
“Who knows what would have happened if they hadn’t.”
Sen Sgt Wilson said the man sustained a “very extensive injury to his arm” and other upper body injuries from the attack.
“He was in a really bad way, he had lost a lot of blood.”
Paramedics rushed the man to hospital where he remained in a stable condition, a spokesperson said.
Forensic police examined the house on Wednesday and Thursday, finding large pools of blood and were still carrying out their investigations into Thursday afternoon.
Sen Sgt described the incident as disturbing but “isolated”.
“The community shouldn’t be too worried about this becoming a trend,” he said.
