Montpellier students in ‘friendly’ challenge for Superkidz triathlon

MORE than a few budding young triathletes at Montpellier Primary School are keen to compete in February’s Geelong Independent Superkidz Triathlon.
The all-abilities children’s event will be part of Geelong Multi Sport Festival on the city’s waterfront from February 10 to 12.
Montpellier assistant principal Chris Browne said many students were already seasoned triathlon competitors.
“We’ve had lots of kids involved in other events and we fully want to support this one because it looks terrific,” Ms Browne said.
“We have lots of good swimmers and many of the kids are keen on athletics.
“We do a bike education program at the school as well, so we’re keen to encourage involvement in the bike leg of the triathlon.
“It fits right in with a lot of the programs we run at Montpellier, so involvement in an event like this is a natural progression for us.
“We want to encourage our children to be fit and healthy and this is a great way to do that.”
“Our 400 metre running track and our new gym get great use because we believe our students will turn out good results because they’re well-balanced.”
Ms Browne said staff were just as keen to compete in the festival’s events for adult competitors.
“We’ve had staff participate in the Great Victorian Bike Ride and we had about 100 members of the school community do Run Geelong.”
Ms Browne encouraged other schools to take on Montpellier.
“I’d love to throw out a friendly challenge to other schools. It would be fantastic to have as many kids as we can enjoying it.”
