On the run for ward cash

High-profile ambassadors of Geelong’s biggest charity run have called for more entries to help refurbish children’s and maternity wards at the city’s public hospital.
Cats skipper Joel Selwood, teammate’s wife Nadia Bartel and local netball star Madi Robinson have thrown their weight behind Run Geelong on 20 November.
The event has raised more than $2.3 million for Barwon Health Foundation since the first run in 2009. Organisers said 100 per cent of proceeds went to the ward upgrades at University Hospital Geelong.
This year’s event will include runs and walks over various distances to cater for adults and children.
“There are so many reasons to get involved,” Selwood said ahead of his seventh appearance in the fundraiser.
“Firstly, because I love the event we put on as a community and, secondly, to see the impact of the funds raised and how they can make a difference to the hospital.
“Don’t miss out on an opportunity to make a difference and get joy out of playing a part in making our community a better place.
Selwood said he would participate in the event’s 6km walk, giving him time to mingle with fans.
“I like participating in this one as it allows me to talk, have photos with as many people as I can and I also get to see everyone smiling.”
Robinson said she was keen to support the hospital again in her fifth event as a Run Geelong ambassador.
“Run Geelong is very close to my heart. Obviously, growing up here you understand how important it is for our families and kids to have access to good hospitals and healthcare.
“I’ve met so many beautiful families over the years that have been directly affected by the causes we have raised money for, so it really becomes a reality and you see why these services are so vital to our community.”
Bartel encouraged new participants to enter this year’s event.
“Just give it a go,” she said.
“Especially this year there’s something for everyone, as you can get the family together and do the 6k walk or there is even a 3k walk option.”
