IT’S NOT exactly a club but people can join.
Roslyn Playgroup Coordinator Lisa Dundas thought that might allow the group to qualify for a profile in Join the Club.
“I really enjoy Join the Club and wanted to suggest our playgroup as a possible example for it,” Lisa emailed.
She explained that Roslyn Playgroup was a not-for-profit, community group run with volunteer parents.
“People join Roslyn Playgroup for all sorts of reasons. They might be new to the area and want to meet other parents and children or want a chance for their kids to play and socialise.
“We run weekly play sessions for children up to five years and have about 160 children from 110 member families at the moment.
“We’re one of the largest playgroups in Geelong but there are lots of great playgroups in Geelong.
“For parents and caregivers, playgroup is a chance to meet other parents in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.”
Lisa said the parents weren’t the only members benefitting from the playgroup.
“Each group decides how they’d like to run but usually the kids share morning or afternoon tea, have time for free play and do an activity.
“The kids love it. They play dress-ups, do play dough, craft activities, climb in the playground or get out their favourite playgroup toys.
“Babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers do much of their learning and developing through play. Playgroup gives children the chance to practice problem-solving, physical and social skills.
“I joined Roslyn Playgroup nearly four years ago when we were new to Geelong.
“I’ve met lots of fantastic people through playgroup, watched our kids grow and learn new things and seen new babies arrive.
“We’ve shared tips, triumphs, hard days and milestones. We all pitch in to help run the group because we see how much the kids love it.”
Lisa said Roslyn Playgroup had a large indoor space with a fenced outdoor playground at Wandana Heights’ hall, with up to 15 families in each session.
“Our families mostly live in Belmont, Highton, Wandana Heights, Waurn Ponds and Grovedale but everyone is welcome.”
Lisa said the playgroup provided a range of toys, books and art and craft supplies.
Special events included Easter egg hunts and excursions, while the playgroup Christmas party featured a petting zoo, miniature train rides, a magic show, face-painting, a Santa visit and presents for the kids.
“Our emphasis is on being welcoming so we offer a free trial for all new families,” Lisa said
Roslyn Playgroup, a member of Playgroup Victoria, has opened enrolments for 2012.
