Crowds take a shine to floating tree as festive season kicks off

LIGHT IT UP: Two 'elves' welcome Geelong's Floating Christmas Tree back to Corio Bay

The iconic Floating Christmas Tree returned to the waterfront Tuesday morning ahead of Friday night’s Light Up Geelong celebrations.
Sophia Katos and Imogen Brough will headline the event performing popular carols until the tree lights up at 9pm.
The tree launch will include the Rachel Brennan Duo, Uptown Brown, Steve Thew, children’s entertainment and, of course, Santa himself.
From 3 December residents will get to create their own colourful displays, controlling the tree from a touchpad at the Carousel.
The City’s investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford said Light Up Geelong would kick-start the festive season.
“The City is proud to deliver such a fun community event that has created memories and new traditions for families and visitors.”
“Come into central Geelong early, take advantage of free parking specials and enjoy dinner and some shopping before getting to the waterfront.”
Mr Luxford encouraged locals to give presents and donations to the Bethany Giving Tree Appeal at the launch.
A full schedule for the events is available at the council’s website.
