Geelong’s young acting talent will hit the stage this weekend in the unique ‘song cycle’ play Edges.
The play will feature Geelong Society of Operatic and Dramatics Arts’ (GSODA) “brightest young musical theatre” actors, said the group’s promoter Carolanne Glynne.
“It’s a witty, charming and emotional theatrical rollercoaster unlike anything staged in Geelong this year.”
Edges is a play of wall-to-wall songs, like Be My Friend (the Facebook song), which look at the trials and tribulations of the social media generation.
Newcomb’s Trent Inturrisi will join the cast, aged 16 to 25, and has “never ever seen a play like this”.
“It’s song after song and each song sort of carries a story in it,” he said.
Inturrisi will play a young man skipping work and falling in and out of love, who travels to Athens for a life-changing experience.
“I love the journey my character goes,” he said.
“As someone who’s 21, I’ve been through some of these issues, and I’m still going through some. I think I’ve learnt a lot about myself doing this play.”
Inturrisi has been acting for eight years and loves “experiencing life through someone else’s shoes”.
“I love my hobby but it’s so very, very tiring,” he said.
He said he admired the work ethic of play’s cast, which has an average age of 18.
“They put a lot of effort into using this experience to improve themselves,” he said.
But unlike some of them, he has no grand acting ambitions.
“I don’t think I could do acting as a career, I think it would ruin it for me,” he said.
“I like my local theatre, I get to do what I love and it’s not super competitive. I don’t have to fear not getting a role I need to survive.”
Adelle Gregory will direct Edges with the support of musical director Damien Montalto.
GSODA Theatre Collective will stage Edges at the Shenton Performing Arts Centre for four shows only from 23-25 September.
