CLOSING Limeburner’s Point boat ramp for another cycling race is “crazy”, according to anglers
Fishing Geelong secretary John Hotchin said the Corporate Cycling Challenge on Sunday, December 4, would close the ramp “virtually all day in prime fishing season”.
Event organisers had been asked to investigate the feasibility of waiving fees at St Helen’s boat ramp as an alternative to Limeburner’s, he said.
“It means trying to squeeze another 160-plus into St Helens, which is already chock full, especially if it’s a good day.
“Limeburner’s is one of the best ramps in the system. Last year the overflow section was open and there was car and boat trailer parking up and down Hearne Pde.”
Mr Hotchin said previous events had also restricted anglers’ access to Limeburner’s, with more to come this summer.
“The recreational fishing industry is worth $2.3 billion yet they take every opportunity to take slices from it. The City is just crazy to allow it.”
City Hall told Eastern Park users the Corporate Cycling Challenge was a fundraising event for up to 2000 entrants competing in a time trial.
The event would start on Geelong’s waterfront, travel through Eastern Park then onto Portarlington Rd to Point Henry before returning.
The race would close Podbury Cres, Lower Hearne Pde, Eastern Park Circuit, Holt Rd and Limeburner’s Rd from 6am to 2pm.
The event would also restrict access to the city’s botanic gardens, conference centre and East Geelong Golf Club.
Golf club manager Russell Lucas said closures and access restrictions were frustrating.
“There aren’t many days when we cannot get access. We do have some alternatives to get in and out,” he said.
“It’s becoming more prevalent but we understand we have to share the facilities.”
Event organiser Steven Greene said ramp fees at St Helens would be waived.
“I believe the event will be beneficial to the Geelong community and council has been happy to get behind it,” he said.
“Unfortunately, there’s always someone inconvenienced but we do everything we can to make sure the inconvenience is as limited as possible.
“The event will contribute to the economy and raise awareness of the beautiful things Geelong provides.”
