Volunteers put women on front foot

Volunteers have put disadvantaged Geelong women on their best foot forward to find jobs.
The community initiative aimed to help 21 long-term unemployed women “overcome multiple barriers” to finding jobs, said the organisers.
Community agency Karingal BacLinks hosted Best Foot Forward to help clients of employment services provider MatchWorks with issues including confidence deficits, financial strains, health issues, limited work histories and inadequate transport.
Workshops built skills and confidence, volunteers from Timetabling Solutions and St John of God Pathology acted as mentors and the women enjoyed hair and make-up treatments along with new outfits from Target.
Tips on interviews and professional presentation rounded out the day of assistance.
“It’s quite incredible to see the transformation of these women,” said Karingal BacLinks manager Joanne Forssman.
“They finish the event with improved self-esteem and newfound confidence in their search for employment. It’s also a great way for them to connect with their community.”
MatchWorks service development and projects manager Sue Gladwell praised Best Foot Forward.
“Ultimately, we’re supporting these women by increasing their chances of gaining employment.”
