A rainbow flag is flying over Geelong’s City Hall for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHoBIT).
A crowd of about 100 attended the flag-raising on Tuesday 17 May in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people.
“The City of Greater Geelong continues to support LGBTI people and to celebrate diversity within our community,” said the City’s community life general manager Linda Quinn.
“It was fantastic to see people from all walks of life celebrating IDAHoBIT and importantly coming together to display a strong message of tolerance and acceptance of others.”
City Hall has now flown the rainbow flag three times as part of council’s GASP program, which has supported young LGBTI people for more than 18 years.
Ms Quinn stressed the importance of acknowledging that many LGBTI people still experienced discrimination and harassment which could have “lasting effects on their mental health”.
