MATTHEW Flinders Girls Secondary College students have swapped books for sewing machines to help breast cancer survivors.
Club coordinator Joanna Metzger said a group of junior students had formed Z Club as young ambassadors for Geelong’s Zonta service club.
The club were organising projects to “advance the status of women and girls world-wide”, she said.
“One of our projects has been to assemble these breast-care cushions for women who have undergone surgery for breast cancer,” Ms Metzger said.
“It’s a crescent-shaped cushion with two shoulder ties to give support during rehabilitation for women who’ve had mastectomies.
“We provide the local hospital with a supply and include a card to let these women know we’re thinking of them and supporting them.”
Ms Metzger said the students were enjoying the chance to participate in “hands-on” charity work as one of only two Z Clubs in Victoria.
“They can see what they’re doing and how it’s going to make a difference in someone’s life.”
