Local surf lifesavers have performed well at the weekend’s Victorian Senior Lifesaving Championships held at Lorne.
Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club heads the standings after the first day of competition.
More than 800 lifesavers hit the sand and surf at Lorne on Sunday 20 March for the event, with hotly contested competition in events including board races, surf races and beach flags.
Torquay’s Zoe Spriggs won the under-19 women’s surf board race while Lorne’s William Bowden claimed victory in the under-15 men’s rescue tube race event on his home beach.
Anglesea leads the overall score on 144 points, a commanding lead over Point Leo on 129 and Ocean Grove on 118.
Life Saving Victoria sport co-ordinator Luke Gavin said it was an exciting day of racing, where beach conditions were expected to be good.
“It was great to see our competitors give their all in today’s events and more importantly, show good sportsmanship,” Mr Gavin said.
The event continues Monday 21 March with team events, including the surf boat competition.
