Where is Geelong’s heart?
Like the character out of the Wizard of Oz, Geelong’s looking for it.
A quirky new YouTube clip features the Tin Man walking through deserted city streets looking for Geelong’s heart.
A City Heart program, launched yesterday, seeks a public space to generate the energy shared by the world’s great cities.
Mayor Darryn Lyons said a vibrant city heart was “essential for the life of the CBD”.
“This is the place that our community can gather. We really want to create somewhere that has a wonderful vibe, full of life and activity.
“A pumping heart and a vibrant economy will take Geelong into the future.”
Cr Lyons said the silent film was symbolic of Geelong’s recent history.
“Like the Tin Man, Geelong traditionally had a strong practical purpose. Over time that practical purpose was lost.
“The Tin Man film is a critical part of generating excitement and discussion about the city heart and the search to find it.”
Cr Lyons said the project would rely on people contributing photographs and ideas of how the city’s heart should look.
A Moorabool Street shopfront has been converted into a City Heart Gallery to accept and display the community photos and concepts for the next month.
Entries will vie for Mayor’s and People’s choice awards.
