Geelong is a hotspot for university students crashing cars, according to RACV figures.
Geelong was eighth on a list of the top 15 municipalities for car collision insurance claims with 2357.
RACV’s Paul Northey said several local government areas ranking in the top 15 for collisions were also home to Victoria’s largest universities
Deakin University has two major campuses in the region, at Waurn Ponds and the waterfront.
Mr Northey urged university students to be alert and ensure their vehicles were adequately insured as classes resumed this month during a peak car collision period.
New RACV Insurance claims data for the past five financial years revealed that March and May recorded the highest number of vehicle collisions.
Mr Northey said that Geelong, along with Melbourne, Boroondara, Monash, Banyule and Whitehorse had consistently been among the most collision-prone municipalities during that time.
He said the figures highlighted that most accidents happened after noon, peaking between 4pm and 5pm.
“Young drivers are most at risk as soon as they obtain a probationary licence,” Mr Northey said.
“In the first year of driving, their risk of crashing is three times higher than an experienced driver.”
