Victims of last month’s flash flooding in Geelong could now apply for disaster assistance, state and federal governments announced on Thursday.
Up to $32,500 was available for clean-ups, emergency accommodation, repairs, contents replacement and rebuilding “a principal place of residence” the governments said.
City Hall would also receive funding assistance to defray the cost of the clean-up.
Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan and Victorian Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said a jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) would provide the assistance.
Both governments recognised the need for quick action to help affected communities recover from the impacts of natural disasters, Mr Keenan said.
“These measures will support the community of greater Geelong with its recovery from the flooding and ease the associated financial burden on the council.
“The Commonwealth and Victorian governments are committed to working together to ensure that disaster affected communities receive the necessary support to help them recover as soon as possible.”
Ms Garrett said the emergency grants would help with essential health, safety and wellbeing needs.
Eligible individuals could apply for Emergency Relief Assistance, providing payments of up to $520 an adult and $260 a child to a maximum of $1300 per household for immediate requirements including emergency food, shelter, clothing and personal items, the ministers said.
Flooding victims suffering from personal hardship and distress should call Victorian Emergency Recovery Information Line on 1300 799 232.
