An elderly couple were lucky to survive after rolling their vehicle and caravan west of Geelong on the weekend, according to police.
The Melbourne pair was taken to hospital after losing control of their Ford sedan at an Inverleigh level crossing on Saturday morning, police said.
Investigators believed the car was travelling west along an 80km/h section of Hamilton Highway when the caravan began to sway from side to side, causing the driver to lose control.
The car veered off the road soon after passing through the level crossing, police said.
The vehicle then struck a railway sign on the Inverleigh side of the crossing.
Police said the caravan then rolled three times before coming to a halt.
The 78-year-old male driver and his 76-year-old female passenger were taken to Geelong Hospital, where they were later reported to be in a stable condition.
Senior Constable Christopher Reynolds said an ambulance arrived about 11am to ferry the injured pair for treatment.
“When caravans sway the car becomes difficult to steer,” Sen Const Reynolds said.
“No other vehicles were involved. Along that section of the highway, winds can be an issue, so whether that caused it to sway or the draft from the car is yet to be determined.
“We had a witness pull over at the scene who’s assisting police with an investigation of the incident,” he said.
