Spending 30 years with one employer was once the standard – these days it’s rare enough to deserve a medal.
“I don’t think they actually hand out medals for the 30-year achievement, but I’d be happy with a badge,” Bannockburn’s Jenny Pilgrim laughed during a break in her shift at Coles’ Geelong West supermarket.
It’s an achievement the mum of two thought might not eventuate four years ago, when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
“The last few years have been tough,” Jenny admitted quietly.
The MS left Jenny battling fatigue and pain and began affecting her mobility.
Working full-time became hard for Jenny, and she feared her health would jeopardise her job and ability to provide for her family.
“Being diagnosed with MS brought so much stress to me and my family, and as a single mum I feared I wouldn’t be able to look after my children financially,” Jenny said.
“However the team at Coles were supportive and gave me the freedom and flexibility to work at my own pace, which I’m very grateful for.”
Jenny has worked a variety of jobs for Coles during her time, with time spent on the floor, interacting with customers, her favourite.
“Customers have remained the constant during my time, when so much else has changed,” Jenny said.
“You get your regulars, and get to know people, and hear about their lives, both happy and sad.”
Jenny spent 20 years working at Coles Corio, as well as short stints at Manor Lakes and Leopold, including helping to set up new stores.
The biggest change has been the implementation of new technologies within stores, Jenny said.
“Everything is so much quicker and easier these days. I remember working on the checkout and having to call out the prices as we were typing them into the system manually.”
Jenny now oversees stock and damaged goods, a position within the store that puts minimal strain on her physical health.
“It’s tremendous to see how committed Jenny is to her work, even while dealing with unfortunate hurdles in her health. The team here are very appreciative,“ store manager Kane Harrington said.
