Numbers up as hunters ‘have a blast’

DUCK shooting has radically declined across the Geelong region this season, according to animal activists.
Coalition Against Duck Shooting’s David Mould said shooting destinations such as Lake Connewarre, Hospital Swamp and Reedy Lake were hosting a handful of shooters each weekend compared to hundreds five years ago.
“We’re only seeing the hardcore element out there and that’s a small minority.”
But Geelong Gun and Rod Association’s Mick Veitch said hunter numbers only appeared smaller this year because they were spread out over increased shooting destinations.
Duck-hunting licenses were up 33 per cent, he said.
“Everybody’s been very happy with the amount of waterfowl around.”
