THE WILD and windy Barrabool Hills in winter could just as easily have been the setting for one of the world’s most tragic love stories.
The affair between Cathy and Heathcliff will be transported from the rugged, bleak Yorkshire moors when Theatre of the Winged Unicorn presents Wuthering Heights.
Adapted directly from Emily Bronte’s novel, the rustic, raw and heart-breaking adaptation would fit perfectly into the Ceres landscape, said director Elaine Mitchell.
“Their love story is cruel, bleak, and wild – no romantic dances and sweet proposals here,” Mitchell declared.
“They’re consumed by each other and no-one else can come close to breaking their bond.
“But it’s a love story most tragic, most harrowing, most doomed, and the fallout permeates into the next generation of their families.
“Heathcliff and Cathy are adopted siblings and best friends, but more than that, they are metaphysically and spiritually bound together.”
The production features a cast of 12, including Simon Finch as Heathcliff, Cassidy Krygger as Cathy Earnshaw, Ben Mitchell as Hindley Earnshaw, Hannah Verspaandonk as Catherine Linton, and Kathryn O’Neill as Nelly, the faithful and long-suffering servant and companion to two generations of tormented Earnshaws.
Theatre of the Winged Unicorn will present Wuthering Heights at 8pm on 9, 10, 16, and 23 October and at 5pm on 11, 18 and 24 October at Ceres Temperance Hall, 20 Wheatsheaf St, Ceres.
