ERIN PEARSON
HIGHTON endurance athlete Grant Suckling will chase an Anaconda Adventure Race series title after adding a silver medal to his belt thanks to a successful round-one race.
Suckling, who must win medals over four rounds to take our the title, finished second after a tough battle with New Zealand’s Richard Ussher as the Kiwi completed a clean sweep of the weekend’s race in Forster, New South Wales.
Ussher dominated all but the swim legs to stamp himself as the man to beat in the chase for the series title.
Suckling finished in 54 minutes over the 110km swim, paddle, mountain bike and trail-run courses.
Third behind Suckling was West Australian Kris Plain who finished 26 minutes later.
Suckling celebrated his second win at the Lorne Anaconda Adventure Race in 2010 as well as his champion position in last year’s series.
The adventure series will now break over winter before returning to the Gold Coast on September 11, followed by Augusta, in Western Australian, on November 6.
The four stage series title will culminate in a race at Lorne on December 4.
