AN UPGRADED pedestrian and cycling bridge and a new public space are on the drawing board to enhance central Geelong, City Hall has announced.
The Central Geelong Task Force plan seeks to install a new, wider bridge with separate paths for bikes and pedestrians on Lt Malop St between Latrobe Tce and Fenwick St to improve a key connection between the city area and Geelong West.
Bike signals would also be installed as part of the Latrobe Tce pedestrian crossing to Villamanta St.
Mayor Darryn Lyons welcomed the bridge works and said the public space would help deliver his vision to make central Geelong a “City in a Park”.
He encouraged residents to examine the proposed bridge development.
“The draft plans were endorsed by the task force at its meeting on 31 July and we’re now welcoming feedback on the project.”
Task force chair and councillor Michelle Heagney called the project an “important step towards improving transport options for central Geelong”.
“The proposed bridge and streetscaping works will provide better connections between central Geelong and Geelong West for pedestrians and cyclists and will strengthen the links between the cultural precinct and The Gordon,” she said.
“New public gathering spaces will be formed on either side of the rail line, with landscaping, seating and public art, creating an attractive pocket park. Trees will also be planted along the length of the street, providing shade and improving the pedestrian experience.”
A spokesperson said the draft plans would be uploaded to the City’s website today.
