ALDI has restated the benefits its Torquay store will offer shoppers, shrugging off a campaign against its siting adjacent to the start of the Great Ocean Road.
With a supermarket war looming for the hearts and wallets of Surf Coast shoppers, ALDI has pointed to 50 per cent savings on grocery bills, up to 20 local jobs at the new store and and pledged minimal parking or traffic impacts.
“There are proven benefits to having an ALDI in the local area, from increased grocery retail options to an overall reduction in grocery costs, and we know these benefits make a real difference for Australian families,” an ALDI Australia spokesperson told the Independent.
“Most recently, consumer advocacy group CHOICE’s 2015 Supermarket Price Survey revealed that by buying ALDI exclusive brands instead of leading brands customers can save approximately 50 per cent off their weekly grocery bill.”
ALDI released to the Independent a concept image of the proposed store as viewed from Rudd Ave. Last week, the Independent published a big box-style store as objectors claimed it might appear from the other end, fronting Surf Coast Hwy where it meets the Great Ocean Road.
The objectors have launched a ‘Stop Aldi in old Torquay’ campaign on Facebook and in competitor supermarkets.
The site’s anonymous administrators accused Surf Coast Shire officers of “grossly misleading” councillors on the ALDI proposal, ignoring recent planning scheme changes and relying on “outdated” consultant advice.
The page had 850 likes last week but has garnered no more since.
ALDI told the Independent it worked closely with the local council, residents and community groups when establishing a new store to ensure it impacted positively on ther area.
“ALDI is eager to bring our unique shopping experience to the residents of Torquay, offering high-quality products at permanently low prices and rewarding career opportunities for the local community,” the spokesperson said.
“ALDI is still in the early stages of planning…however, we are excited about the prospect of a store (near) Bell St, as it’s the right size for us and is nearby other commercial outlets, such as the Torquay Hotel, a local car wash and restaurants.
“Independent analysis prepared for Surf Coast Shire council also supports the development of an ALDI at this site and local residents are encouraged to contact council to express their support.”
Torquay Commerce and Tourism Association has lodged a submission with council voicing support, with some reservations, to the ALDI proposal.
Spokesperson Fiona McCord said the association shared concerns about the store’s appearance and fitting with the town’s culture but welcomed the economic input while recognising the impact it could have on the varied interests of members across Torquay.
The ALDI objections follow unsuccessful campaigns in previous years against other chain developments on the highway in Torquay, including a McDonald’s restaurant and a Bunnings store.
