Cool call ‘saved Hunter’s mum’

YOUNG Hunter Petrass is a Junior Triple Zero hero after demonstrating maturity and calmness as his mother suffered a medical emergency.
The Whittington 12-year-old received an Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) award for his call to Triple Zero (000) when Donna Haby experienced breathing difficulties.
Hunter called 000 and was able to provide the Triple Zero operator with mum’s medical history and symptoms.
Hunter received his Junior Triple Zero Hero award on Wednesday from Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett and awards guest presenter, comedian Dave Hughes.
Junior Triple Zero Hero awards were handed out to another 26 children at the ceremony, now in its 11th year.
“More than 1.7 million emergency calls are made to ESTA via the Triple Zero service every year but these young heroes have stood out for their bravery in situations that could send even the calmest of adults into a panic,” Ms Garrett said.
ESTA chief Ken Shymanski said the Junior Triple Zero Hero awards recognised and rewarded the youngsters’ initiative and clear thinking.
“The emergencies that resulted in today’s awards show that teaching children when and how to call Triple Zero really does save lives.
“It is important that children know the number to call and learn their home address. Location is the first, most critical element in responding to any Triple Zero call.”
