Ex Roo helps vets

Erin Pearson
SPORTING great Glenn Archer has signed on to help the Surf Coast Veterans Centre raise “critically needed” funds to stay on the road, according to organisers.
Archer, who played AFL football for North Melbourne between 1992 and 2007, will host a bowls day to raise funds for the centre’s vehicle costs.
Organiser Val Forbes said the car was relied on by war widows and ex-service people in need of transport to-and-from appointments and hospital visits.
“Monies raised from the event will go towards the vehicle’s running and maintenance costs because with petrol, insurance and registration as well it costs a lot,” she said.
“Our vehicle has become a key part of our operations but we need to raise funds to ensure we can keep it on the road all year round.”
Mrs Forbes, who is also Archer’s mother, said many World War II veterans were housebound or suffered mobility issues.
“We’re certainly hoping to raise a minimum of $5000 to help us for a year or so and if we could get two years raised that would be marvelous,” she said.
The fundraiser at Torquay Bowls Club on January 24 from 4pm will feature a barefoot bowls competition, sausage sizzle and sporting memorabilia auction.
For tickets phone Torquay Bowls Club on 5261 2378.
