Man to be charged with kill threat against mayor Darryn Lyons

By NOEL MURPHY

A BREAKWATER man will be charged by summons with allegedly threatening to kill Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons following an incident at Market Square on Friday.

The man, believed aged in his 40s, was interviewed after presenting himself to Geelong Police Station yesterday.

Security staff have been deployed at City Hall following the incident and an intervention order was yesterday issued by the Geelong Magistrates’ Court against the alleged offender in relation to Cr Lyons.

Police told the Independent the man was a figure known to police.

“We’re looking at a range of offences from threats to kill or seriously injure, that’s one of the things we’re looking at,” a police officer said.

“We’ll go through the process, the brief has to be authorised for prosecution. Once that happens we’ll issue the summons.”

Cr Lyons was allegedly confronted by a man while selling copies of The Big Issue in a promotional event on Malop Street on Friday afternoon.

The alleged assault against Cr Lyons follows an attack on his Home House nightclub in the city centre last June in which three would-be arsonists tried to throw a flaming petrol container through a window.
