Centre funds bid in ‘doubt’

A $50 MILLION redevelopment of Geelong Library and Heritage Centre remains in doubt as election candidates hold back funding commitments ahead of next month’s state election.
Labor Member for Geelong Ian Trezise and Liberal candidate Alastair Thomson both said they supported the project but were unable to confirm funding if their parties won on November 27.
The Independent revealed earlier this month that Geelong’s council would withdraw its $20 million for the centre if state and federal government failed to pay their shares.
Mr Trezise said he could not promise funding “at this stage”.
“I’m well and truly aware of the needs for the library and heritage centre, having visited there on numerous occasions.
“Hopefully we’ll see some funding at the state election.”
Mr Thomson “supported” the redevelopment but was also short of a funding commitment.
“I understand that funding is crucial for these facilities that house Geelong’s historical and cultural heritage and allow for greater learning opportunities within the region. A new facility would also bring more people into central Geelong.
“I’ve raised this matter with (opposition leader) Ted Baillieu and the team but I’m not in a position to make any funding announcements now.”
Councillor Barbara Abley warned time was running out for state and federal governments to make equal $15 million commitments.
“We also need all the parties in the state election to show us their money.”
