New briefs: school swap, waiting lists, fire fines …

Corio Swap
A land swap could keep a disused Corio school’s activity centre in public hands, according to City Hall.
Council has offered State Government land adjacent to the Flinders Peak Secondary College site in return for the centre, which would become part of a community sports facility.

Hospital improves
Waiting lists, ambulance transfer times and emergency department performance has continued improving at Geelong Hospital, according to Victorian Health Minister David Davis.
He released figures this week showing “big improvements” at the city’s public hospital, which achieved the results despite an increase in patient admissions.

Fire fines
Fines of almost $1500 face landowers of fire-danger blocks in Geelong as authorities plan to begin annual inspections in the city’s northern suburbs.
Councillor Lindsay Ellis said inspections would begin on 3 November as the CFA prepared to begin its formal fire danger period in about four weeks.

Leukaemia opening
The Leukaemia Foundation will officially open a new regional office in Geelong West today.
Mayor Darryn Lyons said the ground-floor location of the office, at 240 Pakington St, would assist cancer victims with mobility problems.

Perry good
Jan Juc surfer Jack Perry has won Victoria’s opening title in a final round shootout at Bells Beach.
Series leader James Noble fell in the first round, allowing Perry to clinch the title with a second placing at Bells behind Torquay’s Harry Mann.

Arc up
A $28 million medical centre has been earmarked for Geelong’s “northern arc”, according to councillor Kylie Fisher.
She said council had given in-principle approval for State Government to site the facility in the vicinity of Waterworld, Corio Library and Centenary Hall.
