Cup on city’s pre-Christmas wish list

An Australia bid to host World Cup soccer could deliver an early Christmas present to Geelong football fans, according to the sport’s international body.
FIFA has confirmed it will announce on December 2 whether Geelong and other Australian cities had won rights to host either 2018 or 2022 World Cup matches.
Geelong is vying to host a group stage, round of 16 and quarter-final matches as one of 10 proposed host cities in the Australian bid.
Geelong’s Skilled Stadium would undergo a seating capacity upgrade to 44,000 if Australia secures the World Cup.
Eight other Australian stadiums would also be upgraded and three built from scratch as part of a $2.8 billion infrastructure legacy from hosting the cup.
