GEELONG’s smoking problem has roped the city’s footy team into a campaign highlighting bans on smokers at outdoor sport venues.
Health Minister David Davis said 20 per cent of Geelong adults still smoked, compared to the state average of 13.3 per cent.
The two-year partnership between the Cats, Quit Victoria and State Government’s Health Together Victoria initiative would encourage local smokers to butt out for good, Mr Davis said.
The partnership would “provide more support” to stop smoking, he said.
“New laws banning smoking at public outdoor playgrounds, skate parks, swimming pool complexes and sporting venues during underage sporting events came into force on April 1.”
Cats chief Brian Cook said the club was “committed” to helping Geelong become healthier.
