A MINERAL springs development is a step closer to opening at Geelong’s Eastern Beach.
Mayor Darryn Lyons has announced funding for a feasibility study into developing a “world-class” facility east of Eastern Beach’s swimming enclosure.
State Government today committed $125,000 to match council’s contribution to the $250,000 study into the spa and “wellness” centre.
“To have mineral springs right in the heart of a major city is rare. We have an enormous opportunity on our hands,” Cr Lyons said.
“The Geelong springs were hugely popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I’d love to see the springs rejuvenated.”
Cr Lyons said the spa and wellness industry was growing rapidly worldwide.
“It’s big business and Geelong is perfectly positioned to capitalise on it.
“It’s an attraction that would help set us apart from other destinations. Relaxing in a world-class mineral spa and wellbeing centre while overlooking one of the only north-facing bays in Australia sounds like a perfect holiday to me.”
Cr Lyons suggested the facility could capitalize on cruise ship passengers disembarking at a new pier proposed nearby at the end of Yarra St nearby.
Cr Lyons said the spa centre would be worth up to $20 million annually to Geelong’s economy.
“We’ve had plenty of private interest and this study will lay the groundwork and get us to the stage of seeking expressions of interest from developers.”
