Tree approved
A $500,000 floating Christmas tree is set to light up Corio Bay after Geelong’s council this week agreed to deliver the decoration in time for the festive season.
Mayor Darryn Lyons said the “iconic Christmas installation” would stimulate the local economy with new “wow factor”.

Cats’ 40,000
MORE THAN 40,000 members have signed on to the Geelong Cats for season 2014, the club has announced.
A spokesperson said the total so far had kept Geelong on track to reach its target of a record 50,000 members this year.

Harbour promise
STATE Labor has promised $15 million to start work on a long-awaited Portarlington harbour redevelopment if the party wins office in November.
Labor proposed the Portarlington Safe Harbour project while last in power but failed to deliver before the coalition won government in 2010.

Deakin birthday
GEELONG’S Deakin University has begun celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Vice Chancellor Jan den Hollander noted the university had come along way since 1974, with 47,000 students now enrolled.

Rail coverage
MOBILE phone coverage is set to improve on Geelong’s rail line to Melbourne, State Government has announced.
