Local barista vies for state title

A Torquay barista will challenge Victoria’s best in the Australasian Specialty Coffee Association state championships this weekend.

Aidan Blake from Sticks and Stones is the current Golden Plate Geelong region barista champion.

He will represent the region after topping the cream of Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast baristas in this year’s Golden Plate awards.

As part of the prize he received a complimentary place in the state championships where he will challenge 17 of Victoria’s elite baristas for the coveted state prize.

Aidan will have 15 minutes to showcase his coffee knowledge and present to bevy of judges, preparing and serving four espresso, four cappuccino and four espresso-based signature drinks.

At the same time Aidan is required to talk about the coffee he is using, where it was farmed, how it was processed and how it was roasted – a synergy between coffee, passion and presentation.

The 2014  AASCA Victorian Barista Championships are at the Melbourne Show grounds on Sunday. Winner of the state title will go on to the nationals later this month.
