NEW SMOKING bans will stop spectators lighting up at football matches in Borough of Queenscliff.
The borough has announced that a range of other outdoor areas and events will also be off-limits to smokers from 1 April.
Patrolled beaches, foreshore areas, cricket and netball venues, playgrounds and skate parks are on the list, along with all under-age sports events whether in play, at practice or during breaks.
Smokers will also have to stay at least 10 metres from areas “commonly used by children and young people for all recreational and sporting purposes”.
Mayor Helene Cameron said the bans were all about protecting children.
“I can understand that old habits die hard,” she said.
“I realise the new ban is going to be difficult at first for many people but we should remember it is being imposed in the interests of public health.
“I ask all residents of the borough to embrace the new regulations and ensure this new phase in public and social behavior is accepted.”
