The Princes Freeway between Melbourne and Geelong should have point-to-point speed cameras installed, according to Road Safety Camera Commissioner Gordon Lewis.
Mr Lewis said point-to-point speed cameras were “fairer”.
Point-to-point cameras measure a car’s average speed of over a specific section of road but are only installed on the Hume and Peninsula Link freeways.
Mr Lewis said he would like to see point-to-point cameras extended to various highways and freeways including the Princes Highway and Freeway between Melbourne and Geelong.
He said point-to-point cameras would stop “camera surfing” where many motorists slow down for a fixed camera and speed up again after passing it.
Mr Lewis said a driver’s average speed for a section between cameras could not be above the speed limit with a point-to-point system.
