EIGHT paddle boarders have been rescued from Corio Bay following yesterday’s wild winds.
The Victoria Police Rescue Co-ordination Centre launched an air and sea search after reports the paddle boarders were swept into Corio Bay from North Shore, Geelong when a severe weather front hit the area shortly after 3.15pm yesterday.
Gusts of up to 50 knots and waves of over two metres were recorded.
The paddle boarders, aged between 40 and 60, were located in the water near Point Wilson, with one clinging to a channel marker.
They were found by Life Saving Victoria’s Westpac Helicopter and rescued by the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard vessel.
The search also involved the Victoria Police Air Wing and a number of Water Police vessels.
Two of the paddle boarders were treated at the scene for mild hypothermia.
Water Police Leading Senior Constable Felicity Bell said police were relieved to have located the group of paddle boarders safe and well.
“This rescue should act as a warning to all about how quickly conditions can change out on the water,” L/S/C Bell said.
“We are taking this opportunity to remind the public to boat safely and responsibly.
“Victoria Police urges all boat users to always wear an approved life jacket, check the weather before you go out, let someone know before you go and where you are going and make sure you always stay with your boat or craft.”
