Shopper sought over Aldi armed robbery

By PAUL MILLAR

A TERRIFIED shopper who was in the queue ahead of an armed robbery at Highton’s Aldi supermarket could provide vital clues in the hunt for the gunman.

Detectives are scanning video footage of Friday’s daylight robbery at the busy store.

Detective Senior Constable Brett Hampson said police were following up on several leads.

“But we are especially keen to get in touch with a male who was in front of the offender getting his groceries,” the detective said.

The shopper left before police arrived at the scene and detectives are hoping that he can provide them with additional information.

He is not connected with the robbery.

Police believe the gunman, aged between 20 and 30, had been armed with a sawn-off shotgun.

He demanded money from the stunned cashier before fleeing the supermarket at the corner of Colac and South Valley roads in a red Holden Commodore about 4pm.

Detective Hampson said police believe the vehicle headed down Latrobe Terrace and may have gone on to Aberdeen Street.

Police are also keen to track down the getaway car.

Anybody with any information should contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

The man fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

He was last seen driving in a northerly direction along Colac Road in a red Holden Commodore.

The offender is believed to be aged in his late 20s or early 30s, with a fair complexion, pitted skin, long, brown, wavy hair and appeared to be missing most of his teeth.
