Salvos theft shocks volunteer

A thief has left a Corio volunteer shocked after stealing his car from a Salvation Army car park.
Invalid pensioner Geoffrey Johnson now has to ride a bicycle to carry out his unpaid community work despite a debilitating foot injury.
Mr Johnson said he was devastated to discover his blue 1984 VH Holden wagon missing after completing his shift manning the not-for-profit organisation’s market stall.
He had relied on his car to travel to the Salvation Army office in Corio where he helps prepare a weekly community meal.
Mr Johnson said he was riding his bike to and from the Cox Road centre despite suffering a crushed foot in a car accident two months ago.
“It’s really difficult to ride my bike because I have to wear this boot that is so big and the pedals are so small.
“My foot was crushed like an egg shell and has two pins in it, so it’s not ideal to ride my bike.”
Mr Johnson was shocked anyone could be desperate enough to steal from a Salvation Army site.
“We had a stall here and I left my car there on Saturday night and when I came back to get it on Sunday it was gone.
“I was disappointed and annoyed someone would steal from the Salvation Army car park.”
Mr Johnson said he reported the incident to police but had heard nothing about the investigation.
He urged witnesses or anyone with information to contact Corio Police.
