TORQUAY Highway Patrol members intend to apply at court to have a driver’s period of impoundment extended due to his excessive speed.
A 19-year-old Corio man was first seen travelling on the Princes Highway at Waurn Ponds at excessive speed and failed to stop when police attempted to intercept him yesterday afternoon.
Police followed the man along the highway, which is an 80km/h zone, as he allegedly reached speeds in excess of 200km/h.
The man finally pulled over as he approached Mt Moriac.
The driver told police that he was driving fast because he was angry and had an anger management problem.
The man’s girlfriend was a passenger in the car at the time of the incident.
Police have impounded the man’s Holden sedan and he is expected to be charged with conduct endangering life, evade police and other traffic related offences.
Torquay Highway Patrol member Sergeant Kelly Duhig said he was amazed that no-one was hurt as a result of the man’s driving.
“At the end of the day, what can you say about speeds like that? It’s just ridiculous,” he said.
This fellow has had a licence for twelve months, he’s got no experience, or very little and he’s driving like a race-car driver.”
Other drivers might be doing the right thing, but you will always get someone like this that just does not get the message.”
