LOCAL police are planning a zero-tolerance to bike safety this summer, according to a senior office.
Bellarine Police Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said Operation Cadel would run from November to January with the aim of reducing cyclist road trauma and increasing bike safety awareness.
Sen Sgt Ferrara said the Bellarine Peninsula was a hotspot for cyclists over summer.
“So far there have been two fatalities in this area, which is two too many,” he said.
The “highly visible” campaign would focus on education and enforcement.
“Bike owners need to check their bikes are roadworthy and their helmets fitted correctly,” Sen Sgt Ferrara said.
“Wearing bright-coloured clothing, choosing the safest route and ensuring bikes are well lit will go a long way in reducing collisions.”
Sen Sgt Ferrara said police were urging all road users to consider the safety of others, especially at busy times.
“Motorists should ensure they look out for bikes on the road and allow cyclists enough space to ride safely.
“The police will be watching and enforcing the road rules to ensure safety for all.
“Summer time on the Bellarine means fun with family and friends but all road users need to be vigilant.”
