Lions roar for biggest Aussie day

TORQUAY is gearing up for its biggest Australia Day celebrations next Tuesday, according to organisers.
Torquay Lions Club committee member Peter Thomas said the 2010 celebrations were set to outstrip previous years.
“The Australia Day celebrations have been going for years and years and years. They’ve grown each year and we’re expecting 200 to 300 people next Tuesday,” Mr Thomas said.
The Australia Day service and concert in Taylor Park at 10am will include an official greeting for new Surf Coast residents as Australian citizens.
Surf Coast Mayor Libby Coker will induct the residents as Australian citizens, while Australia Day ambassador Alistair McCooke will entertain the crowd.
Mr Thomas said other highlights would be a bush band concert, poetry, “commentary presentations”, a brunch and family activities such as a Lions train for children.
“We welcome all in Torquay to attend the wonderful Australia Day celebrations. It’s always great to have a large crowd to welcome and encourage our new citizens.”
