Invention trialled Swell idea

A Geelong invention could revolutionise the treatment of knee injuries, according to a researcher.
Physiotherapist Steven Stahl said the new product was designed to speed up the recovery process and relieve symptoms associated with joint swelling.
Mr Stahl said the pad used a chemical reaction to reduce swelling.
Barwon Health’s orthopaedic research unit was trialing the product.
He said the unit’s researchers were yet to work out how or why the pad worked.
However, Mr Stahl expected it would have plenty of users if proven effective.
“Knee pain is a very common complaint in the community and can affect a wide variety of age groups,” he said.
Trial participants would wear the product overnight.
Mr Stahl labelled the trial a world first.
“Similar products have been used extensively in the past and provided anecdotal relief but there has been no scientific study into the effectiveness of this type of product,” he said.
Mr Stahl expected the trial to be completed early next year but could not comment on the chances of the product reaching the market.
“The availability of the product will be a commercial decision for the developer of the product,” he said.
Mr Stahl hoped the results would enhance Geelong’s medical reputation.
“Quite a bit of research goes on and is looked highly upon by medical professionals,” he said.
“Anything that comes out of this region increases Barwon Health and Geelong’s reputation.”
