Small business in Geelong has brushed off concerns about the closure of Ford’s manufacturing operations, according to a survey.
Geelong Chamber of Commerce surveyed members in response to last month’s Ford announcement, finding most expressed strong business confidence.
The chamber said less than half expected to feel any impact from the closure and most did not expect to cut staff in response.
An “overwhelming majority” expected to employ more staff in the next two years, the chamber said.
The respective main concerns of respondents were the Australian and global economies, rising costs, regulations and cash flow.
Incoming chamber president Kylie Warne said the organisation would “be sharpening its focus on being the voice of business”.
Outgoing president Mark Sanders declined to renominate “due to personal and professional commitments”.
The chamber represents hundreds of small to medium-size businesses in Geelong.
The chamber called for removal of “barriers and red tape that hinder business growth”, singling out a proposed seven per cent rates hike for commercial premises in Geelong.
Geelong’s council should reconsider the increase, the chamber said.
