Struggling Torquay Post Office set for expansion

Torquay’s only post office is set for expansion following overwhelming community support for improved services, according to a political candidate who backed the push.

Liberal candidate for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said she was delighted Australia Post had lodged plans with Surf Coast Shire to extend Torquay Post office.

The Independent revealed earlier this year that the post office was failing to keep up with demand, sending excess mail to Belmont for handling.

“My community petition calling for better postal services has gained momentum throughout 2013.  More than 1000 signatures have been collected so far,” Ms Henderson said.

“The campaign to improve Torquay’s postal service has been heard, loud and clear.”

“As I move around Torquay, Bellbrae and Jan Juc, local residents are telling me how frustrated they are with the current post office.  There is terrific support for postal staff but the long queues out the door tell the story.

“With more space for parcels, another customer service counter and a dedicated parcel hatch, this will make a big difference.”

Ms Henderson thanked Bellbrae’s Greg Davis for being the first to raise with her concerns about the post office after it went on “parcel bypass” last Christmas.

“This is a great example of what can happen when a community speaks out.  For those who haven’t signed our petition, I urge them to do so.  The Torquay community needs to show Australia Post it means business,” Ms Henderson concluded.
