A Geelong women’s gym has abandoned traditional fundraising methods with a call for members to donate bras for charity.
Hundreds of bras have flowed to Countours’ two gyms in the city during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Contours owner Sam Jones said the generosity of members was overwhelming.
“We’ve collected between 500 and 600 bras and have raised more than $3500 – it’s a fantastic effort,” Ms Jones said.
“We set a target of raising $1000 but we’ve already beaten that.”
Ms Jones said the money would go to National Breast Cancer Foundation, while the gym would send the underwear to Uplift Bras, an international charity supporting Fijian women.
“It was brought to our attention that women in Third World countries were in need of bras – if they don’t wear bras they suffer a lot of problems and diseases,” she said.
“For us bras are a simple necessity and part of everyday life but not everyone has that luxury.”
Ms Jones said the fundraiser had put the devastating effects of breast cancer into perspective for gym members.
“We all strive for the perfect body but, at the end of the day, you’ve got to have your health and feel good about yourself.”
