Old jail hits the Biggs time on TV

By NOEL MURPHY

GREAT train robber Ronnie Biggs might have escaped jails in Britain, Brazil and Barbados but not Old Geelong Gaol.
The former UK most wanted man has been captured there for posterity in TV mini-series Mrs Biggs, screening on Seven.
The Myer St bluestone Hilton serves as a Brasilia jail where Biggs is reunited with wife Charmian only to ask her for a divorce in a bid to marry a Brazilian girl with whom he fathered a child and to avoid deportation to England.
The Geelong scenes were shot over several days last year, with the real Charmian on set as a consultant.
The series, featuring Sheridan Smith and Daniel Mays in the key roles, plots the emotional roller-coaster life of Charmian Biggs as she tries to keep her family together while on the run around the world after her husband escaped Wandsworth prison and a 30-year sentence for his part in the 1963 Great Train Robbery.
Mrs Biggs screens 9.30pm Sunday.
