Shared taxis set for city, says boss

A FLEET of maxi cabs to replace Geelong’s Night Rider bus could roll out by March.
Geelong Taxi Network boss Peter Valentine said State Government had “approved in principle” plans for large taxis to travel directly to homes from central Geelong on Friday and Saturday nights.
A marshalling service would coordinate groups to fill the cabs, Mr Valentine said.
The Independent reported in June that Geelong Taxi Network and council were discussing the plans.
The program would aim to decrease misbehaviour at bus ranks, Mr Valentine said.
City of Greater Geelong central Geelong and waterfront manager Steve Bentley said council was waiting for Geelong Taxi Network to determine the viability of a shared-ride system.
Council would have to “consider the necessity” of its existing Night Rider service from central Geelong’s nightclub precinct if the shared-ride taxi system was to proceed, he said.
