Local focus feeds organic growth of produce market

A sustainable and local focus has grown an Ocean Grove market fourfold in its first year of operation, according to organisers.
Bellarine Community Farmers’ Market celebrated its first year of successful operation at Ocean Grove Park last week.
Founder and organiser Sally Waites said the market brought together her passions of environment, food, community, sustainability, family and friends.
“The locals have been really behind it because we’ve wanted something like this for ages,” she said.
Ms Waites believed that Bellarine Community Farmers’ Market differed from many other markets in the region because it focused on promoting local produce on a smaller scale rather than expanding into art and crafts.
“It’s about having a difference with each stall. We’ve got a few fruit and vegetable stalls but everyone else has their own little niche.
“We’ve got olive oil, eggs, honey, cheese, bread, meats, baked savoury and sweet goods, popcorn, coffee, flowers, plants, herbs and vegetable seedlings.”
Ms Waites also runs a shared community stall at the market that has allowed smaller growers to sell their produce.
“Anyone can pitch in with their fruit and veg. So many people are getting backyard growing these days,” she said.
“Volunteer helpers are on the shared staff and many people who have produce will stay and help out then what they make on the stall they take home.”
Ms Waites said Bellarine Community Farmers’ Market also supported local charities and community initiatives.
