THE CHRISTMAS rush has forced Torquay’s post office to divert parcel pick-ups to Belmont, 18 km away.
Australia Post’s Mel Ward said online shoppers were putting pressure on post offices to keep up with the flow of parcels.
Parcels were diverted temporarily when post offices reached capacity for parcel storage, she said.
Torquay’s Aileen Cairns said postal customers had been forced to queue onto the footpath.
She believed that Australia Post needed a bigger facility in the rapidly-growing resort town.
Ms Ward said Australia Post was monitoring the area but had no plans for a new facility.
