13th plan rules out ocean trail

NEW plans for a walking and cycling trail along 13th Beach rule out cutting a path through sand dunes on the ocean side of the beach’s access road, according to authorities.
Barwon Coast Committee of Management general manager Bob Jordan said an engineering consultant’s review of earlier controversial plans for the trail had rejected the ocean-side option.
“The consultants report will look at a range of options on the northern side of the road to provide a safe passage for surfers, cyclists and pedestrians,” Mr Jordan said.
“There’ll be nothing on the ocean side.”
Barwon Coast tried to develop the ocean trail last year but dumped the plan amid angry objections from environmentalists and residents.
Objectors feared a path on the ocean side would lead to removal of vegetation and damage dunes.
Mr Jordan said new options included linking the end of Stephens Parade and 13th Beach surf club with a trail or a boardwalk.
However, he said road-widening for cycling lanes was off the table amid “a lack of support” from City of Greater Geelong, which was responsible for the road.
Geelong Environment Council president Joan Lindros favoured a northern-side trail but would rather the road mostly closed to vehicles.
“Ideally, we’d like to see the road only open to cyclists, pedestrians and access to the surf club,” she said.
